Apple is reportedly working on ‘LLM Siri’ to compete with ChatGPT
Apple is developing “LLM Siri,” an advanced AI assistant designed to improve user interactions on iPhones with conversational, natural responses. The system will integrate Apple’s AI models to enhance functionality, including improved text summarization and expanded use of App Intents to work seamlessly with third-party apps.
The tech giant plans to unveil these upgrades as early as 2024, with a full transformation of Siri’s software scheduled for spring 2026. Unlike competitors like ChatGPT, Siri’s focus will remain on practical, localized tasks such as sending messages or controlling smart home devices.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior VP of Software, discussed Siri’s distinct advantages in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. He explained:
“OpenAI advanced voice mode and Siri are quite different… OpenAI might help with quantum mechanics or poetry, but Siri opens your garage, sends texts, and does tasks locally and quickly. There’s a tradeoff across capabilities, but convergence is inevitable.”
Apple has already begun integrating AI features, including a ChatGPT option in Siri through the iOS 18.2 beta. Further enhancements, like Siri’s ability to interpret on-screen content and perform actions within apps, will roll out by 2025.
These updates demonstrate Apple’s commitment to advancing Siri’s capabilities while maintaining its edge in privacy-focused, device-based functionality. With these moves, Apple positions Siri as a strong competitor against ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
